L3/L2 Hangout

Attending: LJ, NG, HW, MU, JB, FL, BH, NS, SG, JD and myself

Our little cohort that started off during the Documentary module has sustained itself and actually grown into an L3 group. We are now fortunate to have a good cross pollination of students on the old BOW & CS modules, a few on SYP, some new comers on the new L3 module and a couple just finishing off L2 and about to embark on L3.

I should have written these notes up straight away and not two months later. So my notes will be very brief.

  • BBC sound archive = free
  • We looked at Bob’s video. Comments: credits need to be slowed down a little. Music works well with the mime. Some felt there was too much going on – maybe centre the main image – need to see full screen. Need to see detail. Agree on size of images. Way “product” is featured is interesting – its what the intention is. The video stands on its own.
  • Holly requested that we share our blogs URLs.
  • Pat McDonald – Anthropocene talk. Aerial pics of north of Scotland – no longer wild – denatured over 20-30 years. “Surveying the Anthropocene” book – overview – different photographers. Toxic sublime and rephotography. This talk fits in with Neil’s BOW. Covered well. Also Robert MacFarlane. About effects of nuclear power. How anthropocene is going to be seen in geological time.
  • LJ: L3 will be about landscape – destructive. Using negatives and used reticulation – bubbling effect – literal and metaphorical. Wants to take that further on destruction – analog and alternative processes. Element of chance. Polaroid lifts – Helen Schiffer.
  • FL: Surrealism – currently looking at BBC4 programs on art.
  • NG: on BOW A3 – patterns on the ground, surface – covered/revealed by sea. Transient encounters of people – footprints. Why using estuary? Sea levels rising?
  • BH: Few more photographic sessions. Metal detecting, local historic sites – old castle. Graveyard, bones (human). Drone for the first time. Use of land over time.

Next meeting 24 February 2022.
