Suboart Magazine

Open Call Output

Exposure to Suboart Magazine’s 11.5 thousand viewers (Instagram) promoting work, my Instagram handle and website URL, as well as through the printed magazine.

I’m thrilled to have a double page spread in this international art magazine (see page 84-85). Suboart Magazine is an international art magazine for emerging artists and they accept most forms of visual art, (painting, drawing, illustration, photography, sculpture, installation, printmaking, performance/video). The magazine was founded in 2020 by an emerging artist, Nina Seidl who is based in Portugal. She is assisted by Carolina Castilho, curator and writer based in Barcelona, and Fola Harold, curator and art enthusiast in Dubai, UAE.

See the digital version on issuu where you can flip through the magazine below. See page 84 for my feature.

Suboart Magazine, #8, August 2023

Printed copies can be purchased through Peecho, a print on demand platform that prints and ships internationally.

More than 70 artists were chosen to feature in the two August editions #8 and #9. This kind of exposure is so beneficial as apart from the artist bio and statement, my Instagram handle and website URL are also featured. I have definitely picked up a few more followers.

Suboart periodically shares excerpts from the magazine showcasing the artists. My feature is on page 8 below.

LightReadings Magazine Online Exhibition and Digital Publication

I was over the moon to open an email from LightReadings Magazine announcing that I’ve been selected for the Family Online Exhibition and Digital publication. Two platforms!

Open Call Output

Work featured in online exhibition and digital magazine which can be downloaded for free, also as via Lightreadsmag Instagram (522 followers) and Facebook (844 followers). My Instagram handle also promoted. Also promoted on Facebook in an individual post showcasing my work. Good opportunity to implement reciprocal followings on Instagram with fellow exhibitors.

Lesson learned: carefully consider the wording of themes for open calls as certain elements of my project might fit, creating more opportunities to showcase my work.

LIGHTREADINGS is a bilingual (English-Greek) online photography magazine which aims to promote creative photography in all its forms and appearances, providing a meeting place for established and emerging photographers, professionals and amateurs.

There were over 250 entries and 23 photographers were chosen, curated by Panos Kasimis and Chiarra Brambila. The final selection was made by the curators based mainly on the quality of submitted work, theme relevance and the final format of the exhibition and publication.

The magazine is free to download and it has been interesting to see how the curators have sequenced all the participants’ images – almost on a thematic basis within the overall theme of Family. The magazine is well laid out and features a brief description of the work as well as the participants’ Instagram handles. There are also brief essays written by both curators, Chiarra Brambila and Panos Kasimis.

My submission can be seen on pages 78-81.

The exhibition went live on Thursday 10th August, 2023 at: https://lightreadingsmag.com/group-exhibition-family/ .

Seasons Exhibition – Glasgow Gallery of Photography

September 11, 2023: Received a certificate of participation for this exhibition.

July 28, 2023: So thrilled to have another of my images selected for an exhibition at The Glasgow Gallery of Photography.

As before, I’ve been asked not to reveal which image it is until the start of the exhibition. A £48 participation fee was requested which covers: the cost of the image being printed, sometimes the framing of the image, the stuff that holds the image on the wall, the use of the gallery, rent, electricity, rates, advertising, the website the hosts the image, the fees to cover the transaction, hanging costs, security, postage, VAT and so on.

GGOP will post pictures of everyone’s work on their social networking channels (Instagram, Twitter and Facebook) and/or videos throughout the duration on the exhibition. The gallery will also also post the images on their website, in an online gallery of each exhibition.

Similar to the previous exhibition I have to decide what happens to the print after the exhibition. There are basically three choices: it can be put up for sale, collected by the photographer (not an option for me), or donate to the gallery and they will then sell it at a price set by the gallery. I decided to up it up for sale and if not sold within the 3 months I’ll donate it to the gallery.

The exhibition runs from 1st – 29th November, 2023.

Getxophoto Festival – A Few Images [1 – 25 June 2023]

Getxopho Festival is a themed festival and makes use of non-conventional formats for their exhibition spaces ranging from façades to shop windows, waste containers, bars, patios or buildings. The festival is conceived as a walking tour, the recommended starting point is the Info Centre, where one can get a map of the exhibitions, information on each work and author as well as different suggested routes.

Open Call Output

Getxophoto Instagram following: 10.4K, Facebook 6K, Twitter 3K, Mimarte.shop.getxo 4.5K following on Instagram. Also foot traffic throughout June 2023, and featured walk-about tours – unable to find numbers. Featured in Participacion Popular catalogue and Mimarte Shop window.

The problem with being so far from the exhibition space where one’s image(s) are being exhibited is that one isn’t there to document it. I decided to email friends and family in Europe to see if anyone would be able to take some photos for me. Unfortunately my one family member who does live in Spain is situated about 1,300 km from Getxo, which apparently is in the north near the Andorran border. I emailed fellow student Blas Gonzalez to see if he could help out and he kindly contacted some fellow photographer friends in that region who were able to take some photos of the installation for me. My image was installed in a tea/coffee gift store so I also contacted the shop owner through Instagram to see if she would be willing to take a few images for me. She kindly sent me an Instagram reel and photograph.

She apologized for the reflections, but I rather like the added reflections. There is an extra heteroglossic point of view added to the image with the slanted fence overlaying the twig, water and ice debris, the tree acting as a backdrop to the figures on the steps and the houses to either side, which reminds me a little of a World War II bombed out scene. .

My sincere thanks to the shop owner at Mimarte.Shop and to Blas and his friend, Olatz. OCA student network in action!

Tied to Light Collective Instagram Feature

Open Call Output

Exposure to Tied to Light’s 4, 636 followers via Instagram feature. Opportunity to showcase experimental work that didn’t make the book.

Lesson Learned: Attention to wording of open calls allows for opportunities to showcase experimental work outside of book publication.

Back in March I had applied to the Tied to Light Collective’s open submission to be featured on their Instagram page. Although my photomontages were not successful as they tend to concentrate more on showcasing the materiality of the photograph, they did express an interest in seeing more of my snow experiment images which they had seen on my website. They urged me to submit a selection of these images.

I had taken a few images from my Body of Work and put them outdoors during the winter in such a place where they were covered by snow and ice for about 5-6 months. I then photographed them after the thaw when I was able to retrieve them from the ground. Tied to Light featured the images below on their feature list towards the end of May 2023.

I was over the moon to open an email this afternoon informing me that I’ve been selected to take part in the next Loosenart exhibition.

I had entered three images, and two were selected. All the selected images can be seen here. There are some really awesome images that were selected and I’m thrilled to be part of it.

Loosenart takes care of all the exhibition costs except the artwork/s printing costs.

At the end of the entire exhibition each artist can receive (picking up at the exhibition venue or via shipping service) his own Artwork Print including the paper Exhibition Catalogue (format 29 x 21,7 cm / 11,4 x 8,5 inch) and the Exhibition Poster (format 42 x 30 cm / 16,5 x 11,8 inch). Shipping cost is borne by the artist.

To take part in the group exhibition a payment of €34.80 per artwork was requested to cover printing a print useful at the format of 70 x 50 cm ( 27,55 x 19,7 inch).

I also had to set a price for each image. Not knowing what to price the images at I reached out to another fellow student/recent graduate who had exhibited with Loosenart previously to check the price she had put down. I then did a bit of online research on Loosenart’s site and found that there seems to be a standard fee for the 70 x 50 images (smallest size) and a standard fee for 3 larger versions as well. So I just put down that fee which was €280.00. A 50 word description of the artwork was also requested, as well as the usual website details, and social media handles.

We were requested to upload our images again at a higher resolution: 300 dpi, Adobe sRGB, 8 or 16 RGB bit, jpeg or tiff. The photos will be printed on Fujifilm DPII Profesional Matt 260g – C-type prints.

Loosenart has dedicated a web page for the exhibition where all communication with the artists will take place, exhibition poster and all news about the event will be posted. Each artist will be kept updated during the exhibition via this web page. Photos from the exhibition will be posted. Dates of the exhibition may be subject to variations, confirmation will be posted on the page as well.

The Millepiani Exhibition Space looks amazing. Below are a couple of images that were shared showing images hanging in the space.

Millepiani Exhibition Space

The exhibition will run from 23 August to 4 September 2023 (dates still to be finalised). My selected images are the two photomontages below. Great grandma Mary Hopkins seems to be a lucky charm for me!

My selected images

Now all I need to do is try and find someone who can take photos for me … Anyone going to Rome in the summer?
